Infamous Permanent Marker Mug Decor

FAIL.

I was so excited to create this DIY. I saw it on Pinterest and thought it was an itty bitty fun way to celebrate my new engagement. I love crafting and it was so simple.

Ceramic mug. Permanent marker. Oven.

Creatively decorate your plain mug with permanent marker, then place in a cool oven, turn heat to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for nearly an hour. DO NOT TOUCH, let cool for a long time.

Sounds great! I tried (as seen in image above). It was great. It looked great. Success!
So I thought…

3 or 4 HAND washes, and off the embellishment went!
I have also tried this with mugs for my fiancé, and they too lost their designs. If anyone knows what I am doing wrong, please share! I love the idea for personalized gifts and my own simple creative expression, so I wish it was in fact, permanent.

To leave on a positive note: maybe this happens so we get a blank slate to begin again? Re-ignite the creativity? Perhaps!

  1. A good – I d uhmm – would be to find a food safe clear-coat, perhaps spray paint or a fine layer of nail polish. A clear protective cover seems to be the magic answer. Or maybe we can try and use a stronger marker.
